Zusätzliche Informationen:

Heinrich Heine, the German poet, wrote this poem when in exile in Paris in 1848. Heine describes in the last, the Vth verse, how the German monarch will be decapitated. The drawing, made by a French artist, illustrates how this will come about. Wilhelm 2, the German Kaiser, and his crown prince are being led to the guillotine. The "German Michel", symbol for the ordinary German, wearing a pointy cap, is waiting happily to do the job of the executioner.
